Sometimes I find it hard to keep my focus on one particular idea when it comes to painting and so sketching in color is a way to get alot of my thoughts down on paper and when ideas flow at a slower rate I can then settle on one and focus in for more time consuming work.
You have captured the mood very well in your atmospheric studies. I often prefer studies to finished works they have a freshness a spontaneous feel to them that is full of life. I think the sketch book is a great idea it gives us the artist permission to simply get paint down fast and it is exciting to see the results. It is often the case that we can learn a tremendous amount by working like this.
